Guiding Principles
How we decide what to make, and how to make it.
01Always be helpful
The real art of living in relationship is being helpful to the ones you love. Helpfulness is separate from usefulness in that helpfulness is supporting and coming alongside, where usefulness is simply a tool. Being helpful is about the posture you maintain while being useful.
02Core value at the first interaction
We don’t withhold what can be most helpful behind a gate or transaction. When helpfulness reaches its limit inside of a relationship, agreements will be made. A transaction deepens the relationship, and thus should deepen the helpfulness.
03Everything can be delightful
Delight doesn’t need to mean surprise or excess. Sometimes delight is quiet and invisible. There’s no reason helpfulness can’t be fun, but fun shouldn’t be the primary objective to an action while in service.
04Technology should get out of the way
The point of having a screen in our lives is to make contact with ourselves or others. Once contact is made, the screen becomes exponentially less useful. Designing experiences to keep people arrested on a screen is unethical.
05Elegance is the goal
Elegance is complexity made simple. Simplicity alone is not enough. When something is elegant in its execution of helpfulness, the delight comes naturally.
